Is it bad to change jobs too often? How often should you change jobs?

Change is a normal part of life but if you work in HR what would your first reaction be to a person who never stays more than a year anywhere?

Job changing frequently too much can hurt your career, but that doesn’t mean that you should stay put forever. Changing jobs, the right way and at the right time will help you build a career that’s truly satisfying.

Recruiters could be less interested in someone who has been job hopping than someone with a stable track record. From first impression if they see you took a job and then left after 4 months, the first thought is that you got fired or left. If a candidate does those multiple times that means a red flag to potential employers. So, the HR will think that he is a waste of time because he would do it again.

Now changing jobs more frequently is not only no longer viewed in a negative manner, but it can also greatly benefit your career. On the other hand, if switching jobs means you’re taking care of your mental health and enjoying a better work-life balance, then nobody should get in your way.  People looking for better career prospects, professional growth or new challenges at work. A varied CV can suggest that a candidate is interested in developing his or her talents, accepting different responsibilities and stepping out of their comfort zone. That can be just what the employer is looking for.

People don’t change job only because they are not satisfied from the current job they work. For some people, changing jobs can be a chance to improve job security or for others, it’s all about maintaining a good work-life balance. The more often and more fearlessly you step out of that comfort zone, the more your comfort zone will expand. If you don’t actively enlarge your comfort zone all the time, you won’t see your own possibilities.  Changing jobs often will make it easier to see that there are no limits for you. There are times when changing jobs could be beneficial for example it’s a good way to strengthen your professional experience and achieve incremental salary increases.

My parents stay in their jobs for 35-40 years and retire. That really doesn’t happen in today’s world.

So, what do you think is better today for your professional career?
